People go to chiropractors for a variety of reasons, usually because they are in pain. The primary feature of chiropractic treatment is the adjustment of the misaligned vertebrae. The common way is diversified technique - using the hands to realign the spinal segment, and in several cases activator technique - where a hand held instrument that produces a low force correction in that area is used and in severe cases a manipulation called flexion-distraction is done where a special table is designed to align the vertebrae in a gentle traction type maneuver.

Chiropractic helps people with low back pain, mid-back, neck pain, joints of the arms, hands, and legs whiplash, other forms of discomfort and injuries, sports injuries, strains, sprains, and even in managing some types of arthritis, pain of migraine and other headaches, muscle spasms, and nerve inflammation that can cause numbness and tingling without the need of drugs and surgeries.

After reviewing your medical history, a physical examination will be conducted that includes orthopedic and neurological evaluations by asking you to take an X-ray or review the past one. In addition, mobility and positioning of spinal joints, muscle function, posture, and overall range of motion are evaluated.

After deciding on the course of treatment you may be asked to lie down on a padded massage-type table for spinal adjustments or you may be seated on a stool or in a special chair that provides access to your back. You will be treated fully clothed or asked to wear a hospital gown. The process may take an hour as it begins by applying little force and you can feel the pressure or sound like crackling from your spine, which normally will be comfortable and relaxing experience. It makes one feel less pain and reduce tension and feel flexible in the areas adjusted. But if you feel serious discomfort inform it to your practitioner.

There are two types of treatment by a chiropractor – Manipulative and Non-Manipulative Therapies. In Manipulative therapy Manipulation and Flexion Distraction is performed while in Non Manipulative therapy Electrical Stimulation, Massage, and Ultra Sound.

Manipulative Therapies:

Manipulation:
Means to adjust the spinal joints to correct the subluxations (Joint dysfunction). Subluxations can cause pain, numbness, dizziness, a feeling of pins and needles, and other neurologic symptoms. Manipulation adjusts the spinal joints to correct subluxation(s). The successful manipulation done by hands applies pressure on the joints or muscles and alleviates muscle spasms causing spinal nerve irritation.

Flexion distraction: Combines chiropractic manipulation with gentle adjustments made to the patient. It helps the patient to slowly move up and down, side to side, and to rotate on the treatment table that help to mimic flexion/ extension, lateral flexion, and circumduction.

Non-Manipulative Therapies:

Non-Manipulative Therapies:

Electrical Stimulation:
Also known as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) delivers a painless electrical current through the patient's skin to specific nerves. The current produces mild heat that works to relieve stiffness and pain and helps to improve range of motion (mobility). This treatment is non-invasive with no known side effects and used to control acute pain and chronic pain.

Massages:
Massages are of many including Acupressure, Deep Tissue and Myofascial release. Massage may benefit patients with sprains or strains and other soft tissue conditions.

Acupressure:
The practitioner uses his hands and fingers to apply steady pressure to specific body points (meridians, acupressure points). Acupressure theory claims that it opens blockages allowing energy (Qi, "chee") to freely flow. This type of massage also stimulates circulation to help remove toxins and promote healing.

Deep Tissue Massage:
Deep tissue massage works to increase the flow of lymphatic fluid. Overuse and injury can cause pain, stiffness, and numbness. The practitioner uses his fingers, thumbs and elbows to work into the muscles and connective tissue. The lymphatic fluid helps to maintain the body's fluid balance and protect against infection.

Myofascial Release:
Fascia is a sheath of connective tissue that supports muscles, bone, and organs. Stress from injury or poor posture causes the fascia to tighten. As the fascia constricts, muscles and bones may be pulled out of place causing pain. The practitioner uses his fingers, palms, elbows and forearms to firmly and gently stretch the fascia.

Ultrasound:
Ultrasound a common non-invasive therapy used to treat back and neck pain, tendon and ligament injury, muscle spasms, joint problems and other spine related conditions. A gel is applied to the patient's skin to create a friction free surface and the ultrasound probe is gently swirled over the area. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to deliver heat deep into tissues or muscles. This therapy promotes circulation and healing, relaxes muscle spasm, decreases inflammation and helps to alleviate pain.

Conclusion:

Chiropractic can be said that it has a philosophical aspect besides the science and art. Chiropractic is non-surgical, drug-free therapy that seeks to treat the "total person”. Doctors of Chiropractic recognize that regardless of the type of doctor one consults, the body uses its ability to heal itself. Chiropractic uses a natural means to assist the body in healing itself. A Doctor of Chiropractic accomplishes this assistance by focusing on removing nerve interference, allowing for optimal ability of the body to heal itself, thus providing a state of optimal health to the patient.
