Food you eat can work to keep the bones strong as we age, and some can even help you replace lost bone mass. Women are at high risk for osteoporosis, the brittle-bones disease as after menopause, and the decline of estrogen stores cause women to start losing bone. Hormone replacement therapy can help, but even if you choose to take estrogen, the diet you take in should be of calcium, vitamins and minerals to help you benefit.

 Calcium:
Calcium is used to build up bones in the body. All adults under 50 should be getting 1,000 milligrams a day; the amount should be increased as the age grows up.
The easiest way to add more calcium to your diet is to eat more dairy products.
Milk, Cheddar cheese, Cottage cheese, Yogurt provides calcium. Fortified orange juice and cereal are also good sources. If you aren't able to get enough calcium from your diet, a calcium supplement can be considered after discussing with your doctor.

 Vitamin D:
Your body needs calcium that can be obtained from sunlight; Elder people should try to spend ten to fifteen minutes early in the morning in the sun to enable the body to make all the vitamin D it needs. Many cereals contain some vitamin D, now we also find D vitamin added to Milk. Talk to your doctor to check if you are getting enough of vitamin, else a multivitamin or a calcium supplement that contains it may be prescribed.

 Soy:
Eating food rich in soy protein may help prevent bone loss. Soy can be added to your diet by snacking on roasted soy nuts, tossing some tofu into a vegetable stir-fry, and using soymilk on your cereal or in smoothies.

Other Problems:

 Chewing:
Many elders will have trouble eating foods like meat and fresh fruits and vegetables, as it is difficult to chew. Try other foods like fresh fruit juices and soft canned fruits, raw vegetables vegetable juices and creamed and mashed cooked vegetables meat ground meat, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, and foods made with milk, like pudding and cream soups, sliced bread cooked cereals, rice, bread pudding, and soft cookies.

 Upset stomach:
Stomach problems, like too much gas, may make you stay away from foods you think cause the problem. This means important nutrients, like vitamins, calcium, fiber and protein are missing when you do not eat. Instead, milk foods; cream, soups, pudding, yogurt and cheese can be taken. Vegetables like cabbage and broccoli vegetable juices and other vegetables, like green beans, carrots and potatoes fruits, juices and soft canned fruits can be also taken. Check with your doctor if you have a problem of diabetes as your sugar levels may rise eating few types of food.

 Shopping:
Sometimes some elders are left lonely without support, while few like to live alone without disturbing their children’s life. They eat and cook on their own, but sometimes shopping for groceries may be difficult as they cannot walk or stand for long time.

Select shops or food stores that deliver groceries Free to your home.
You can also ask your neighbour or a family member to shop.
Few companies hire health workers for a few hours to help shop for you.
Ask the church or synagogue or local volunteer center for volunteer help.

 Cooking:
Many elders will have problems with cooking, especially to hold utensils, pots or pans or even to stand in the kitchen.
It is ideal to use a microwave oven to cook or have food delivered to your home. These meals cost less and sometimes free.
IF not move to a place where someone else will cook, like a family member's home or a home for senior citizens.
You can appoint a cook who can cook for you.

 No appetite:
Older people who live alone sometimes feel lonely during mealtimes. Loneliness can make one lose appetite. One may not feel like preparing food for just yourself and sometimes food may not taste good due to the medicines older people take.

Try to sit with friends and family while eating.
Talk to your doctor about the medicines causing taste problems that may change the medicines.
Increase the flavor of food by adding spices and herbs.
Sometimes shortage of money to buy enough food can keep you from eating.

Avoid animal protein food that absorbs calcium especially Meat.
Stop drinking alcohol and quit smoking as they can harm bone cells and disrupt their absorption of calcium and vitamin D.

Care for the Aged:
Remember that your grandparents or your old parents or old relatives are to be given respect for their age and also taken care. You might not remember your grandparents playing with you when you were a child, the stories they told you, the hero they made you, the support they were when you had a bad score in school or college, or into some problem, the care they had when you were sick and the pocket money they gave you and the gifts they bought for you.

Now it is our turn to repay them as much as possible by being helpful to them in their old age. Their age puts a barrier to many things, shopping, cleaning, gardening, cooking, visiting, and many more things. It is our duty as younger than them to try to spend some time for them, run errands to buy grocery, medicines, or to clean the house or garden, take them for a walk to the park or to the church, mosque or temple. Help them to visit the doctor if they feel sick. Check what they are eating and whether they are taking their medicines in time. Sometimes it may require that they have different medicines for the day and they may forget what to take in the morning or noon, so put the required medicines in different colored boxes marked for morning, noon or night and explain what colored box to use and when.

Take some fruits or their favourite food once a while and you can see the smiles on their faces. You should know that their life in this world is going to end soon and whatever time they live in this world it is our duty to see that they live in happiness.

As they grow older they become like children and they behave like a small child, some may be stubborn or may want too much attention, which may not be possible for others who are busy with their works. Explain to them and make them understand, never make the old people angry as they are quick to temper at this age, it damages their health too.

If you have your aged friends or relative in some old age home, visit them frequently to make them feel they have someone who visits them. Many old age homes are very friendly and they may enjoy the company of the other people. Enroll the aged in elders clubs and get-togethers. This way they can meet others and have a friendly environment.

Share a joke or a funny incident with the old people at home, this not only brings a smile on their face, they will give you some tips to handle situations and even share an incident that has happened to them long ago. These simple tricks make them memorize their olden days, and they start sharing their experiences. Yes, Older people are to be taken care of and never try to make fun of them, cause one day we will be passing through the same age and we will experience this life. Teach your children to respect elders and also how to help them. Your child will not only learn but also take care of you when you are old.
