Decorating In Fengshui Way By Pramila Paul
Children's Room:

Children should not be sleeping on double bunk beds. This affects the health of the child sleeping underneath. If you have bunk beds for them, try to place a metal 6 rods wind chime or a crystal sphere, to break up the "stale chi" around this bed.

If your child usually falls sick in that bedroom, change them to another bedroom or simply hang a six rod metal wind chime in the entrance of the room or top of the bed.

Children should always read and write with their back to the wall. It is also important to have a solid wall behind a children's writing table as this allows the child to have support and make them sit there and study longer.

Child's bed should not be placed under a window or under a sloping ceiling. Chi energy is very unstable and fast moving here, and can cause health, behavior problems and restless sleep.

Do not position your child when studying with their back to the entry door. If there is not enough space and no other way, place a mirror above their desk so that they can see the door behind them.

Do not have any furniture, cots corners or sharp angles directed toward the children, both in bed and while seated at their work area. If there are beams in that room, soften their negative effects with bamboo wind chimes or hanging crystals.

Paintings of Beautiful scenes from nature, such as mountains and glowing sunsets, offer support and encourage positive, imaginative daydreaming. Do not display angles, anything depicting violence, or anything that could be interpreted as scary, always Choose positive images for art in a child's room...

Color has a profound effect on children. Choose colors to enhance the traits that you want to develop in your child. Decorate or paint walls with splashes of green, orange, yellow, and red in simple and cheery designs or soft pastel shades of green and blue with soft beige or very light blue walls.

Encourage your child to keep their room clean and tidy. Provide plenty of storage places including shelves and baskets for toys and favorite objects.

Hang a crystal in the south west corner of your child's room to improve the relationship between your child and the rest of your family.

Don't keep electrical equipment such as computers and televisions in your child's room. If this is completely unavoidable, provide plastic covers and get your child into the habit of covering them when not in use.

Study Room:
It is important to keep this room tidy and uncluttered as failing to do so will produce Sha. As this is a room where we require creativity and contemplation we must do all we can to produce Chi.

There should be a comfortable high-backed chair and the table facing the wall. If you have any shelves in this room, area, keep them clean and clutter free. Place symbols of scenery, high mountains with rivers flowing that will help encourage the flow of creative energy.

Place the desk so that the window is to the left of the seating position and so that the door can be seen from the desk. Do not allow the occupants back to face the door. If there is no window available put a mirror in its place.

Take care to remedy the view of threatening elements from the window by placing wind chimes or plants. Any sharp leaved plants are good Feng Shui in this area as they are believed to deter harmful influences

Bamboo is the best plant to be in this study area, near your table. Cactus also can be placed near your computer as these two plants grown in very harsh conditions and symbolize good fortune, thus making them ideal for placement in the home office, study or wealth area.
Kitchen:
The kitchen is an extremely important room since it is directly connected to the health and prosperity of the household.

The Chinese believe malevolent spirits come from the North and so Good Feng Shui dictates that your Kitchen should NOT face this direction as it may increase the chance of mishaps.

The stove should face East and the person cooking to face east and cook. If your kitchen faces any other directions apart from east always have crystals or wind chimes hanging from windows or doorways facing this direction is an effective cure

The stove should be positioned so as to avoid the cook standing with their back to a doorway. A mirror or any highly reflective kitchen appliance placed above the stove will counteract this problem by providing reflection so that the cook can not be taken by surprise. Good lighting and ventilation by the stove will reduce the influence of Sha.

Keep your kitchen and vessels clean. Do not let dirty dishes pile up in the sink. Dust the shelves and remove any stale food stored. Cutlery should not be stored in a stagnant area as the negative influence on sharp object will serve to cut your health. Place them in a drawer nearest to the doorway or window.

Avoid placing your refrigerator in the wood area (east or south east). The refrigerator is made of metal, which in Feng Shui is said to destroy the wood element. Clean out cupboards and the refrigerator on a regular basis.

Use bright, warm accent colors in the kitchen. Yellow and orange, images of flowers and fruit, and light airy fabrics all help to radiate an air of abundant, good living. White is the preferred color for kitchens. It symbolizes purity and therefore promotes good health from well prepared (pure) food.

A toilet next to a kitchen produces Sha (negative energy). Keeping the door closed and the toilet lid down will help as will the placement of a Bagua on the toilet door.

Avoid placing onions and garlic where visible, as these are considered to be in a state of subtle decay. Display fresh fruit, in a beautiful bowl, as a symbol of health and abundance.

In your kitchen, ensure that opposite your stove there is no refrigerator, washing machine, washbasin and toilet.

Keep your sink (water element) far away from your stove (fire element). This is a major change one must consider in the kitchen. If this change is not possible place an auspicious plant such as lucky bamboo (balancing earth element), between the fire and water elements.

Never leave your knives out on display. These create negative energy.
Dinning:
Do not have marble table in your dinning room they causes you to have lot of work pressure. Instead always go for a wooden table and chairs.

The ideal shape of your dining table is octagon as in the bagua. However tables of this shape are not practical. A round table is said by some experts to be "as good" symbolizing earth and stability.

The dining table should be oval, round or rounded rectangle shaped. If your table is rectangular or square, the placing of an octagonal centre piece or place mats is good Feng Shui.

The seating arrangements for the family dining table are based on the order of the trigram in the Bagua.

When it comes to the arrangement of furniture in the dining room, place chairs that they do not restrict doorways. There should be enough space to walk around the table without having to man oeuvre around chairs or other furniture.

The dining table should not face any doors or the staircase.

Always have an even number of dining chairs and remember to seat an honored guest facing the doorway. Dining chairs with a horseshoe shaped back are ideal Feng Shui

If your dining room has no windows a chandelier or a ceiling fan will assist the flow of Chi. Always use soft even lighting in the dining room as well as soft colors such as shades of green or yellow.

To enhance your health, wealth and happiness place the Three Star Gods over looking your dining table.
Stairways:
Stairways are to be positioned properly, else they may cause problems in the way they defect Chi.

Stairways that curve along their path are ideal, but they should not be too sharp a bend. If you have something like this solve the problem by placing Plants mirrors, or Wind chimes.

A stairway should not be opposite your front door as they allow most of the Chi to rush through and up to the next level causing the ground floor to starve you can always place Plants, mirrors, or Wind chimes and allow chi to flow inside your house.

Placing plants beneath the stairs is also good as it allows good energy to flow through. A light can also be fixed here.
Bathroom:
Keep the bathroom very clean and neat. Avoid clutter and arrangements of small objects that tend to collect dust.

The bathroom facing north is ideal as this direction is associated with water. North is associated with malevolent spirits and is subject to mishaps, so care should be taken to ensure the safety of children and the elderly. Things to be considered are the sharp objects and non-slip surfaces.

Bathrooms and toilets are used for hygiene. These rooms can actually pollute Chi and so we encourage the speedy flow of Chi here. Always keep the windows open for fresh Breeze, mirrors and Feng Shui crystals will assist the flow of Chi. Place a mirror (Octagonal) on the door.

Do not forget to open the bathroom windows and allow sunlight to stream into the room as much as possible. Fresh air and sunlight are the best defenses against mold and stale, damp 'chi'.

If you have no windows in the bathroom it is important to have bright even lighting install "grow" or full spectrum bulbs. You can place plenty of healthy, leafy plants as they help absorb moisture and minimize the problem of stagnant 'chi'.

Lucky Bamboo is perfect in conditions of low light and thrives on the dampness in the bathroom. Seven stalks are recommended since this is the auspicious number for promoting health.

Mirrors in the bathroom speed up the flow of 'chi' and give a spacious feeling to a small room. Never place mirrors opposite each other as they reflect and 'Chi' becomes trapped between them and cannot circulate.

Space clearing is an important element in maintaining a healthy bathroom. Burn Incense once a while as they add pleasant smell improving the quality of chi or energy.

Always kept he toilet seats and the bathroom doors closed whenever they are not in use as Bathrooms have a profoundly draining effect on healthy 'chi' in the home. The colors Blue and Black are favored here for their significance to water also.

Avoid the use of too much fabric. Surfaces should be easy to keep clean and dry, to avoid the accumulation of excess stagnant yin energy. Glazed ceramic tile, glass, and chrome fixtures are all very yang, making them very effective 'chi' movers.

You can use crystals to increase the amount of yang chi energy install an efficient, quiet exhaust fan and use it on a daily basis.

When encouraging the flow of Chi in this area we need to be careful not to drain Chi from a wealth area such as a home office or study rooms nearby.
