During the Vedic period people built homes, temples and hermitages with a view to have a peaceful and harmonious. Vastu Shastra teaches a person to use these eight directions. Let us now know what each direction importance is and how to build or place things in this areas.

North-Kuber

North direction is known to be very auspicious. Lord Kuber governs this area and Mercury is the planet ruling here.

Character:
North and Mercury- indicates finance, money matters, education, business, knowledge, speed, information, science, thoughts, automobiles, transport, purchases, conferences, observations, and analytical power etc. The color is green and it governs the brain, lungs, skin, nervous system, memory etc.

Location:
The north direction can be used for entrance, living room, library or room for the elders, sick, with more doors and windows, balcony, more open space, a wash basin can also be fixed here.

South - Yama

Lord Yama and planet Mars are principals of this direction.

Character:
In vastu south is said to be not that auspicious as mars is a indication of anger, courage, cruelty, battle, dignity, explosive, impatience, impulsive, initiative, irritation, pain, leadership, fire strength, accidents, aggression, burns, challengers, construction etc. The color red is dominant. Mars rules gall bladders, fever, cuts, infections, disease, and surgical operation. While Yam god is known for black magic, corruption, crime, destruction, violence, pollution, compulsion, clubs, atomic energy, havoc, murder, crime etc.

Location:
The best area to locate a master bedroom, living room, furniture this area or to the west side. IF you are having an attached toilet, only little space should be used for it. Heavy plant and machineries in factories etc should be in this area. Do not have an entrance from the south side.

East - Sun

The sun rises in the East, and this is the power for light, will power, generosity, solar system, luck, creativity, nobility, superiors, rulers etc. Sun rules the bones, eyes, heart, spinal code, vital force, blood circulation etc.

Sun illuminates the universe and sustains life in this world; sun is source of heat, light, ultraviolet rays, and vitamin D, useful to human life.

Character:
East direction is known to be very auspicious as this belongs to the lord Indra. It is advisable to have the entrance doors, windows, veranda, balcony, or attached bathrooms in the east. Always have more open space in East side, as it will give health, wealth, prosperity and progeny.

West - Varun

West direction belongs to the lord Varun and Saturn is the ruling planet.

Character:
Varun is known to control water with both good and bad powers. Saturn governs death, difficulties, fate, fatigue, fear, inferiority, adversities, poverty, prejudice, traditions, requirement, frustrations etc. Saturn governs the bones, teeth, spleen, rheumatism, cold and accidents.

Location:
You can have your children's bedroom, study room, overhead, water tank, toilet, dining room, staircase etc in the west direction.

Northeast corner - Esanyam

The corner part called northeast is the most auspicious place in vastu as the Lord Esh is believed to govern this area. While planet Jupiter rules this area. This governs feet, thighs, liver, blood, muscles, and growth, fat in the body.

Character:
This indicates charity, improvement, religious, prayer, growth, luck, wealth, praise, donations, higher education, good nature, good will, abundance, beneficial, blessings, books, budgets, clothes, gains morals, optimism, prosperity, riches, trust etc.

Location:
It is advised to have a place of worship in the Northeast area. Place of worship, study room, underground water tank, entrance, basement, water pot, guest room, garden or photograph of your god in this area. Always try to have more open space with a slope in Northeast side.

Northwest Corner - Vayu

Moon represents and controls this area. Moon signifies - mother, women, servants, water, travel, food, Colors are violet and silvery white. Moon is a sign of sensation, impulses, feelings, ideas, economy, imagination; it controls the stomach, bladder, breasts, womb, the female functions, childbearing, brain and mind.

Character:
This corner is controlled by Vayu, (Air) so one should have sufficient windows in North west corner, if this corner is extended or excess it will effect financial loss, ill health, weak for human growth, unhappiness, mental unrest, defamation etc.

Location:
North West direction prefer garage, store, toilet, parking place, bedroom, for newly married couple, children's bedroom, worker residence, water storage, etc. which will give fame and prosperity.

Southeast corner - Agni

The Planet Venus controls this direction. Venus indicates hospitality, luxury, beauty, woman, social life, culture, donations, enjoyment, finance, fun, gains, happiness, harmony, love, music, partnership, vehicles, receptions, pleasures, decorations etc. Venus governs the throat, kidney, complexion, hair and semen.

Character:
South East is the best area for Agni (fire), so a kitchen should be placed here. The platform should be of 90 degrees south east corner shape only, if the kitchen is extended it will result illness, unnecessary expenditure, quarrel litigation, etc.

Location:
Colors of kitchen wall & floor can be orange, yellow, and red. Avoid dark and black. The washbasin or sink should be in northeast or east direction. The water container- pot, cans etc should be in placed in the north east direction, while the electrical appliances can be fixed in the south east or south direction.

Southwest corner - Nairuthi

Southwest corner should be exactly 90 degrees; else one may suffer from financial losses, unhappiness and loss of reputation.

Character:
This corner direction is characterized by adversity, death destruction, evil, calamity etc. Therefore this direction should never be kept vacant - it should be loaded with heavy materials and heavy - immovable goods.

Location:
Southwest direction is best placing for master bedroom, cupboard, wardrobe, dressing room, staircase, lift, and bedroom for adults, storage rooms etc. Remember not to have any door entrances here, as the door entrance in this direction, is inauspicious.
