Introduction:
Vastu in Sanskrit means nature, a surrounding or environment. The word "Vaasthu" came from Vasthu - represent anything existing e.g. house, shelter, building etc. Shastra in Sanskrit means Systems or Knowledge.

Vastu Shastra is an ancient art and science, containing principles and practices of constructing buildings that ensures a harmonious balance between man and nature and thereby brings all round happiness, health, wealth and prosperity. The traditional practitioners of Vastu were called Vastushastris whose area of knowledge extended from philosophy to astronomy.

The Vastu science is founded upon the laws of nature. The equilibrium we observe in the nature is easily perceivable by us in all-moving bodies, but unfortunately we are unable to note this equilibrium in static bodies. The basic source of energy of the whole world is stored at North and South Pole. It flows uninterruptedly from North Pole to South Pole in the form of magnetic waves. Therefore Southward portion of every building should be higher than the northward portion so that there may not be any hindrance to the flow of magnetic waves.

Origin:
Vastu Shastra finds its origin in the Vedas, of ancient Indian society. Ancient sage of India laid down several principles for constructing buildings taking advantage of the nature. The fundamentals were the Earth's magnetic field, the solar energy and cosmic rays to assure harmony in creation, resulting in health, wealth, prosperity, and wisdom and much more to members of society.

The Original story according to Hindu Vedas is that it finds its origin in one of Veda called the Stapatya Veda, a part of the Atharva Veda. Legend has it that Lord Brahma passed on this knowledge to Lord Shiva, who in turn passed it on to Sage Vishwakarma and there onwards, it has been carried down to the generations. It is the equivalent of architecture plus a result oriented field to assure harmony with the universal rhythm of creation, resulting in health, wealth, prosperity, wisdom and much more to members of society. Thus Vastu Shastra has evolved over thousands of years, out of experience and foresight of ancient Sages of India and is believed to be very valuable for the well being of mankind.

Vastu and Fengshui:
Vedic Vastu Shastra is a very scientific understanding of nature with the basic five elements. They are there physically, where as in Feng Shui, it is more of a kind of belief and faith. Fengshui does not consider cosmic energies while Vastu Shastra is based on it. Without the energy of the sun, the entire universe would be non-existent. If Fengshui works for someone, then Vastu Shastra will create miracles.
